The DRB and RSV/NRSV examined

The modern Latin Sixtine/Clementine Vulgate has a partial overlap in alterations similar to that of the modern Codex Sinaiticus. A third category of “critical text” Catholic versions tend to include changes from the latter. Whether the origin of these changes are later Latin manuscripts that formed these Vulgates of Sextus and Clement (1590/1592), or whether it actually originated from an Alexandrian codex is not always clear. That is to say, the source of the corruption that we see to the original Greek in these versions is not always clear. However, in comparison between these versions and the modern versions, most changes are not found in the other, so warranting a separate page to catalogue these changes separately.

Changes in the DRB:

Mark 1:2 corrupted and made to be factually inaccurate (in DRB/RSV/NRSV)72As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.” KJV

As it is written in Isaias the prophet: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare the way before thee.” DRB
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way;” RSV

Note: the quotation from Mark 1:2 is not found written anywhere in Isaiah. It is written in Malachi 3:1. The quotation from Mark 1:3 is in Isaiah, meaning that the combined quotation is written “in the prophets,” and that it is factually inaccurate and incorrect to say that the entire quotation is written in the prophet of Isaiah. Yet this is what these versions have Mark say.

2 Samuel 21:19 & 1 Chronicles 20:5 contradicting (DRB/RSV/NRSV)73Both places in accurate grammatical context say “the brother of” Goliath. The word grammatically before Goliath is אֵת , which is a word that, while untranslatable by itself, can be used to specify proximity, as for instance with prepositions such as “among.” Therefore, the only difference in the texts at these specific points are that the words “the brother of” is given in italics in the first passage of the KJV, but not in the second passage – because the word given in the same place in Chronicles is literally “brother [of]”: אֲחִי . So then mistranslating 2 Samuel 21:19 by ignoring ” אֵת ” present in that verse creates a contradiction.
2 Kings 25:3, Jeremiah 39:2 and 52:6 contradicting (DRB)74In Jeremiah 39:2, the DRB changes the day from “ninth day” to “fifth day” as the day that the city was broken up, creating a clear contradiction with the other two passages which are never changed and still say “ninth day”.
1 Samuel 13:1 contradicting numerous passages (DRB, and RSV/NRSV)75In 1 Samuel 13:1, the DRB contains the statement “Saul was a child of one year when he began to reign,” which in its English meaning implies his age was less than 24 mo. old. This contradicts numerous other passages about Saul. The KJV rendering adheres to both the grammatical construction of the sentence and the context: It states “Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,” – and it is easy to understand, that Saul, who was anointed and proclaimed (by some) as king in ch. 10, had already reigned one (1) year by the end of the events of ch. 12. Afterward, as 1 Samuel 13:1 indicates, he reigned one (1) additional year, meaning that overall he had reigned two (2) years, before the start of events of chapter 13.76In 1 Samuel 13:1, the RSV/NRSV oddly declines to interpret the grammar of the sentence and leaves a curious ellipse, where instead the word “one” would normally be implied. It says, “Saul was . . . years old” with a footnote saying, “The number is lacking in the Heb text.” The translations suggest that a word is missing. This indicates their a priori belief that a “missing word” has been “corrupted” from the Hebrew text. In reality, it is true that a “blank space” may be used to indicate the number “one” by default, which is where we get the number “one.” So this is not at all a difficult passage to understand.
Isaiah 14:12 substitutes Jesus’ name (see Revelation 22:16, 2 Peter 1:19)
changes in these translations that lessen deity of Christ:
Isaiah 63:16 (RSV/NRSV)77Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.” KJV

“…thou, O Lord, art our Father, our Redeemer from of old is thy name.” RSV
“…you, O Lord, are our father; our Redeemer from of old is your name.” NRSV

Micah 5:2 (RSV/NRSV)78But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” KJV

“…one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.” RSV
“…one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.” NRSV

Note: the word “origin” implies coming into existence. See the definition of the English word “origin.” Does God the Son have an “origin”?

Philippians 2:6 (RSV)79Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:” KJV

who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,” RSV

The RSV version states that he did not count himself worthy of obtaining equality with God(!!) In fact the term here signifies not exploiting or brandishing the equality with God which was already possessed, as opposed to not obtaining it. This is explained more in the article in defense of Philippians 2:6
