“No one has ever seen God. The only one, himself God, who is in closest fellowship with the Father, has made God known.” NET77Note: The corruption to John 1:18 found in the ESV, NET, NASB and some other translations was used primarily or entirely by the Gnostics and later the Arians, such as at the Second Creed of Antioch in AD 341. The Arians taught the idea that Jesus Christ was a created sub-deity, and they denied that Jesus Christ, the Son, is of the same substance with God the Father. The same also referred to Christ using the new term, recently found in the ESV and NASB-2020 version of John 1:18. Characteristically, the Trinitarians historically refer to Christ as the “only-begotten Son” (similar to John 3:16, and the received form of John 1:18) instead of “only-begotten god.”78Compare the alternative reading of John 1:18 in the ESV, NET, and NASB-2020 at John 1:18 with the Gnostic belief in the Valentinian tradition about a “lesser deity” which they referred to as “the only-begotten” god [μονογενὴς θεὸς].
